Program therapists can complete a Functional Assessment of a parent/guardians ability to safely provide for the developmental needs of their child. The evaluation includes observation of the home environment, interaction between the parent and child, and interviews with collaterals such as child-care providers, school personnel, or other caregivers, or treatment providers.

The evaluation results in a custody recommendation to the court. In most cases, children’s interests are best served by an ongoing relationship with both parents that includes frequent, predictable contact.

The Center for Youth and Family Solutions will only complete Custody Evaluations that have been ordered by the court. Illinois State law specifies that the party requesting the evaluation will pay for the evaluation, however, the agency asks that the court require each party to have a financial stake in the outcome by paying a share of the fee.
